Niigata, the birthplace of Nishikigoi (ornamental koi carp)

Nishikigoi, born in Ojiya and Nagaoka

It is believed that Nishikigoi originated around 200 years ago, during the mid-Edo period, in the Niju-mura area of Koshi District—now part of Ojiya and Nagaoka in central Niigata. There, a naturally mutated variety of common carp (Magoi) was first bred as an ornamental fish. Since then, major varieties such as Kohaku and Taisho Sanke were developed during the Taisho era, followed by Showa Sanke in the early Showa period. Today, over 80 different varieties of Nishikigoi are bred and admired around the world.

Nishikigoi gained nationwide recognition after being exhibited as “Echigo no Kawarigoi” (Echigo’s unique koi) at the Tokyo Ueno Exposition in 1914 (Taisho 3). Later, in 1938 (Showa 13), they were also showcased at an exposition in the United States, where they received high praise and international attention.
